Signs and Road Right-of-Ways
Sign Placement -- “State law prohibits placement of private signs of any kind on highway right of way. Highway right of way include driving lanes, inside and outside shoulders, ditches, sight corners at intersections, and boulevards in urban areas. This includes all state, county, city and township roads.”
Township Signage Guidance
Girard Township limits installing discretionary signage on its roads to ensure motorist safety and based on the guidance of Township Road Engineer Jeff Stabnow, who has provided the following direction to the Township Board:
“There are costs associated with every sign we allow in our right-of-way, such as “Slow” or “Dead End” signs, which includes a clear recovery zone for anyone who inadvertently strays off the driving lane.
The actual cost of a sign includes installation and additional ongoing maintenance costs including more complicated mowing and snow removal.
Both signs are discretionary and are not required or recommended by MnDOT for roads with our traffic counts.
“Therefore, it is my engineering recommendation that these signs not be installed.”
